NSS Legislative and Political Action Network Center

NSS Legislative Blitz

Every February, as the U.S. Congress begins its deliberations on the federal budget, NSS members visit Representatives and Senators in their offices in Washington, DC, in support of the Society's most important space-related agenda items for the year. This event, held over a three-day period, typically involves meetings with over one hundred congressional offices.  This activity is open to all NSS members — no experience necessary, and, the more the better! — and allows members of Congress to hear directly from their constituents about the importance of expanding civilization into space. For more information on the Legislative Blitz, please send an e-mail to Rick Zucker.

NSS Political Action Network (PAN)

The PAN is NSS's phone tree and is instrumental in contacting members personally to notify them of important issues and to request their participation in efforts to call, write, or email others, including their elected representatives, about particular space issues. This activity is open to all NSS members. Please join the NSS and its Political Action Network using our Online Membership Form. If you are already a member of NSS, and would like to join the PAN, please send an e-mail (with your name, address, telephone number, and your NSS membership number, if known) to Rick Zucker. See also Guidelines for Contacting Congress and Find Your Elected Officials.

NSS Policy Committee

The National Space Society's Policy Committee is responsible for formulating and implementing the Society's positions on space activities, from NASA to industry to personal spaceflight. As a grass-roots advocacy and educational organization, NSS must be proactive and forward-thinking in sharing its message with the public and with elected officials. To achieve these ends, the Policy Committee, chaired by Greg Allison, is divided into two subcommittees:

Policy Formulation Subcommittee

This subcommittee, chaired by David Hitt, is responsible for discussing and formulating the positions NSS takes to advance the cause of human beings living and working in communities beyond the Earth. These positions are reflected in formal position papers, letters to elected officials, press releases, web site content, and messages presented during our Society's annual Legislative Blitz.

Policy Implementation Subcommittee

This subcommittee, chaired by Rick Zucker, is responsible for calling our members to action, and for otherwise communicating NSS messages and policy positions to the public and to elected officials. Policy Implementation activities include the NSS Political Action Network and the NSS Legislative Blitz.
